Ireland in Argentina
With the largest population of Irish descendants outside the English-speaking world, Argentina is Ireland’s oldest partner in Latin America.
Our relationship is one of deep historic, cultural and people-to-people links, and continues to grow from strength to strength.
Ireland opened its Embassy in Buenos Aires in 1948, making Argentina Ireland’s oldest partner in Latin America and the Caribbean. Alongside these historical and cultural links, today our relations have been enriched by cultural, commercial and educational links.
Growing links
The Irish community in Argentina play a huge role in creating and maintaining the positive relationship between our two peoples.
As well as our people-to-people connections, educational and commercial ties are further cementing the links between our two countries.
Argentina is Ireland’s third largest trade partner in the Latin American and the Caribbean region, with exports and imports between the two countries growing by a massive 80% in the last ten years.
With numerous research partnerships and Argentine universities delivering Irish Studies Programmes, there is also a thriving environment of collaboration across Irish and Argentine institutions.
