Today Ireland and Belgium work together for peace and prosperity – both in the United Nations and in our shared home in the European Union.
Both countries share a commitment to multilateralism, are dedicated to defending human rights, and are devoted to fighting against the climate crisis.
People-to-people connections
We have an estimated 10,000-15,000 strong Irish community living, working, and studying in Belgium. In 2021 the Irish language was granted full official and working status in the institutions of the European Union, which opened the door for more Irish people to make the move to Brussels. Around 10,000 Belgians are estimated to have made Ireland their home.
Trade links
Our countries are close trading partners and this can be seen in the ever-increasing levels of trade and investment. Belgium is Ireland’s second largest trading partner globally, with a total of €33.2 billion in two-way trade in goods and services in 2023.
Our excellent trade relations are still expanding as we are working together on a resilient post-Brexit and post-pandemic economy.
