The Consulate General of Ireland, Toronto is seeking a highly motivated, enthusiastic and hardworking person with excellent communication and interpersonal skills to fill a full-time Public Diplomacy Officer position. The Public Diplomacy Officer will be a key member of a small but dynamic team, with responsibility for public diplomacy and administrative support to the Consulate. The successful candidate will be resourceful, flexible, and eager to contribute to the overall success of the Consulate General of Ireland.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- The precise range of duties will vary over time according to the needs of the Consulate, but will include the following:
- Develop, implement and administer public diplomacy and outreach efforts, in conjunction with other colleagues;
- Propose and administer activities to raise awareness of Ireland including through cultural, trade and community activities;
- Develop content for the Consulate’s social media accounts;
- Support the development of the Consulate’s communications / social media strategy;
- Event logistics and management, including management of event space when permanent Chancery becomes operational;
- Research and report writing including assistance on specific public diplomacy projects, media monitoring and political/economic topics of interest;
- Management of logistics for high-level visits;
- Contributing as part of the wider Consulate team to administration and other work as required. In particular, contributing to dealing with dealing with visitors to the Consulate, phone and email enquiries;
- In addition to the above, the Public Diplomacy Officer may be required to carry out other functions subject to the business needs of the Embassy, including periodic out of hours and weekend cover for the Embassy’s consular duty service.
Essential Requirements candidates must be able to demonstrate:
- Candidates must have a university degree;
- Candidates must have previous relevant professional experience;
- The candidate must be willing to regularly work out of hours to support outreach activities as required;
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, Outlook;
- The candidate must have experience of working with social media platforms;
- The candidate must have experience of administering outreach and engagement activities including on the ground events support experience (including virtual events);
- The candidate must demonstrate, using work based examples, evidence of providing excellent interpersonal skills, being persuasive, working in a team but also dealing effectively with people in external organisations;
- The candidate must have proven ability to build relationships and maintain a network of contacts across academic, funding agency, industry and public-sector communities;
- The candidate must provide evidence of flexibility, efficiency and effectiveness showing strong organizational skills, attention to detail, able to work under pressure and to manage multiple tasks;
- The candidate should provide examples of being solutions-oriented, and committed to delivering results, including by adapting approach if necessary;
- The candidate must be fully proficient in English (language test may be included as part of the shortlisting process);
- The candidate must demonstrate using examples, their working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel);
- All applicants must have a permanent legal right to reside and work in Canada.
Desirable Skills and Experience:
- A good understanding of the role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Consulate General of Ireland, Toronto;
- A good understanding of the political, economic and cultural landscape in the Consulate’s areas of operation;
- Photography / video-editing skills;
- The successful applicant will work alongside other local employees of the Consulate, and will report directly to the diplomatic staff in the Mission. Previous experience in a diplomatic mission is desirable, but not essential.
Terms and conditions of employment:
- The successful candidate will be hired on a fixed-term contractual basis and will be based at the Consulate General of Ireland, Toronto;
- Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week, with standard office hours from 9.00 am to 17.30pm;
- Annual Leave entitlement 20 days per annum;
- The salary for the position is CAD 56,670.00 per annum, paid locally on a fortnightly basis. Salaries are paid direct to a bank account, therefore, the successful candidate must have a bank account.

Selection Process:
- Depending on the number of applications received, a short-listing of candidates to be called for a competency-based interview may be undertaken based on the Essential/Key Requirements above;
- A skills test may be included in the recruitment process;
- It is planned that interviews will be held in the second half of September;
- A second interview may be included in the recruitment process;
- A panel may be set up depending on the calibre of candidates.

Security Clearance for Local Staff
Police security clearance will be sought in respect of individuals who come under consideration for appointment.
