‘Common Space’ – Irish and Danish perspectives on diversity and inclusivity in architecture & design
We were delighted to host an event during the UIA World Congress of Architects CPH 2023 on ‘Common Space’ – Irish and Danish perspectives on diversity and inclusivity in architecture & design.
Many thanks to the speakers for their generous and fascinating insights, and to Sandra O’Connell, of the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland (RIAI), for skillfully moderating.
In her keynote presentation, Shelley McNamara, Grafton Architects spoke about generosity, the importance of cities being a space of welcome for everyone, and how architects have to design with the whole community in mind. In the rich and thought-provoking panel discussion, we heard from Ciarán Cuffe, MEP, about the New European Bauhaus, Ronan Phelan, Managing Director of Scott Tallon Walker Architects, on building with connection to culture and community, and Svava Riesto, Københavns Universitet - University of Copenhagen, on going beyond 'big architecture heroes' for more diverse perspectives and representation.
With sincere thanks to Tom Watts, Design & Crafts Council Ireland, we were also thrilled to mark 60 years of the Kilkenny Design Workshops, which originated from the 'Scandinavian Report', with a great exhibition, and showcasing two striking pieces of Irish design here in Copenhagen.
