Female travellers
There are certain risks associated with travel for everyone. There are, however, some destinations where female travellers may face heightened risks on account of local laws and customs based on gender.
This page outlines particular Travel Advice for women travelling alone or in female-only groups:
Sexual harassment and sexual assault
There are certain destinations where female travellers could be at a higher risk of sexual harassment and sexual assault. This can be further complicated by local authorities’ responsiveness to gender-based crimes as attitudes on this subject may vary greatly to those in Ireland.
It is advisable for women to always remain aware of their surroundings, and understand the laws surrounding, and local perceptions of, gender norms of the destinations they are travelling to. It is advisable to exercise caution when interacting with strangers, and other tourists, in these destinations.
It is often unadvisable to walk alone at night. If using a taxi, it is advisable to ensure that the driver is both officially licenced and from a reputable company. Always sit in the back seat of the taxi.
If you are the victim of a rape or sexual assault abroad your local Irish Embassy or Consulate is there to help And will offer confidential and non-judgmental support.
Date rape drugs
In certain destinations, criminals may use dating applications and social hotspots such as bars and nightclubs to lull women, as well as men, into a false sense of security. It is very strongly advised to drink responsibly so as not to inadvertently lower one’s alertness in such situations.
Never leave food or drinks unattended and exercise caution when accepting food or drinks from strangers or new acquaintances. If you do begin to feel strange or unwell, contact a trusted friend straight away who should help take you to a safe place such as the hotel or accommodation where you are staying.
You may also wish to contact local authorities or your nearest Irish Embassy or Consulate.
Violence against women and mobility curtailments
All acts of violence against women are violations of fundamental human rights and cannot be justified by any basis. There are certain destinations, however, where, owing to local laws and customs, it may be substantially more difficult for women to report and seek redress for such acts than is the case in Ireland.
Not all legal systems have gender-based violence protections in place. In certain jurisdictions, legal impediments may also be placed on women’s ability to travel in the country or leave the country unaccompanied.
We strongly advise Irish citizens to research the protections and local provisions in such destinations before travelling. Avoid travelling to such destinations if at all possible if you believe you may be at risk of gender-based violence.
In the event of an emergency abroad, please contact your nearest Irish Embassy, Consulate or Honorary Consulate immediately.
