Peace and Security
The maintenance of peace and security, as enshrined in the UN Charter, is a common goal of Ireland and our EU partners.
Our work towards this goal is based on experience of conflict in Ireland, on well-established policies pursued with our international partners, and by the contribution of our Defence Forces internationally.
Conflict resolution
Our experience of the Northern Ireland peace process and of international peacekeeping, development and human rights, led to the establishment of our Conflict Resolution Unit in 2007.
Peacekeeping
Our tradition of peacekeeping stretches back to 1958 and continues today with Defence Force and civilian participation in a broad range of operations.
International Security Policy
In addition to Ireland's proud tradition of UN peacekeeping, Irish experts with a range of skills are deployed as part of a comprehensive approach to tackling the root causes of conflict.
Disarmament
From the formulation of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in 1968 to the present day, Ireland has played a leading role in the promotion of disarmament.
Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP)
The CSDP provides the EU with the capacity to undertake peacekeeping and conflict prevention missions outside the Union in accordance with UN principles.
Women, Peace and Security
We work to empower, to protect and promote the rights of women in conflict and post-conflict emotions.
Protecting Civilians in Urban Warfare
On 18 November 2022, delegates from across the world adopted a Political Declaration on strengthening the protection of civilians from the humanitarian consequences arising from the use of explosive weapons in populated areas. The Political Declaration was formally adopted by 83 countries.
