Ireland in Estonia
Ireland and Estonia work together for peace and prosperity within and beyond Europe. We work side-by-side to create a European home that allows our citizens to freely travel, live, work and enjoy life together.
As a pair of small independent northern European countries, Ireland and Estonia share many similarities and deep positive connections.
Both successfully fought to become independent a little over a century ago.
Both use multilateralism to amplify their voice and influence in the world – sharing democratic values, advocating for human rights and the rules-based international order.
Both have worked well within the European Union to develop their societies into modern, advanced, high tech economies, while maintaining and fostering their own unique cultures and languages.
Our continuing connections
In 1991, Ireland co-sponsored Estonia’s entry into the UN and in May 2004, Estonia’s ambition to become a member of the European Union was realised during Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
Since then, thousands of Irish and Estonian citizens have taken advantage of the right to travel, live and work in both countries, strengthening personal connections. Irish culture continues to be prevalent in Estonia, with Irish music and Irish literature visible across the country.
