Ambassador of Ireland to Germany
Dr Nicholas O'Brien
Welcome message
It is both a privilege and an honour to represent Ireland in Germany. Relations between Germany and Ireland are strong, vibrant and warm. They are also enduring. Ireland and Germany celebrated 90 years of diplomatic relations in 2019 but, of course, relations between our two peoples stretch back much further than this. St Killian was an early arrival in Germany when he travelled from his native Cavan to Würzburg in 686 and left an enduring mark on German-Irish relations, which is still celebrated in Germany today.
Germany is a key partner of Ireland and this is reflected in the strength of relations at both official and personal level. We are both proud members of the European Union and share common values which bind us together.
We are also close trading partners and this can be seen in the ever-increasing levels of trade and investment and also in the field of scientific research. We are particularly fortunate that Enterprise Ireland, IDA, Tourism Ireland and Bord Bia are all represented in Germany.
Our cultural links stretch back over the centuries and this is reflected in the appreciation of many Germans for our music, writing and art. Indeed, many German readers have come to know Ireland through Heinrich Böll’s ‘Irisches Tagebuch’.
I would like to extend a particular welcome to newly arrived Irish people in Germany. Please have a look at the resources available on our Embassy website, including the Irische Monatsbuch. We look forward to working with you through the many Irish cultural organisations in Germany.
Together with our Consulate General in Frankfurt and our Honorary Consulates in Stuttgart, Cologne and Hamburg, we are committed to deepening relations with our German hosts and serving the needs of Irish citizens.
With kind regards,
Dr. Nicholas O’Brien
Ambassador
Willkommensnachricht
Dr. Nicholas O’Brien
Botschafter
Teachtaireacht fáilte
Is mór an phribhléid agus onóir dom ionadaíocht a dhéanamh ar Éirinn sa Ghearmáin. Tá caidrimh idir an Ghearmáin agus Éire láidir, bríomhar agus an-cáirdiúil. Tá siad buanseasmhach freisin. Ceiliúrimid deich mbliana is ceithre fichid de chaidreamh thaidhleoireachta idir an Ghearmáin agus Éire le linn 2019 ach, ar ndóigh, síneann na ceangail idir an dhá phobal ar ais i bhfad níos faide ná sin. Ba é Naomh Cillian ceann de na hÉireannaigh is luaithe san Ghearmáin nuair a tháinig sé go dtí Wurzburg óna áit dhúchasach i gCabháin i 686 agus d'fhág sé marc buan ar chaidreamh na Gearmáine-na hÉireann, atá á cheiliúradh go fóill sa Ghearmáin inniu.
Is comhpháirtí lárnach í an Ghearmáin d’Éirinn agus léirítear é seo i neart na gcaidrimh oifigiúila agus pearsanta araon. Is baill bródúla den Aontas Eorpach a bhfuilimid araon agus roinnimid luachanna comhchoiteanna a cheanglaíonn le chéile muid.
Is comhpháirtithe trádála dlúth sinn freisin agus is féidir é seo a fheiceáil sna leibhéil trádála agus infheistíochta atá ag síormhéadú agus i réimse an taighde eolaíochta. Tá an t-ádh orainn go bhfuil ionadaíocht oifigiúil ag Enterprise Ireland, IDA, Tourism Ireland agus Bord Bia sa Ghearmáin.
Síneann ár naisc chultúrtha siar thar na céadta bliana agus léirítear é seo i léirthuiscint go leor Gearmánaigh inár gcuid ceoil, scríbhneoireachta agus ealaíone. Go deimhin, tá go leor léitheoirí ón Ghearmáin tagtha chun eolas a fháil ar Éirinn tríd an "Irisches Tagebuch" a bhí scríobtha ag Heinrich Boll.
Ba mhaith liom go háraithe fáilte faoi leith a chur roimh mhuintir na hÉireann atá tagtha chun na Gearmáine le gairid. Breathnaigh ar na hacmhainní atá ar fáil duit ar suíomh gréasáin na hAmbasáide, lena n-áirítear ár Irische Monatsbuch. Táimid ag tnúth le bheith ag obair libh trí na heagraíochtaí cultúrtha Éireannacha ar fad Ghearmáin.
In éineacht lenár Ard-Chonsalacht i Frankfurt agus lenár gConsalachtaí Oinigh atá i Stuttgart, Cologne agus Hamburg, táimid tiomanta do chaidreamh lenár n-óstaigh Gearmánacha a dhoimhniú agus freastal ar riachtanais shaoránaigh na hÉireann a dhéanamh.
Le gach dea-mhéin
