66 tonnes of Irish Aid departs for Gaza through Jordan
Over 66 tonnes of humanitarian stocks from Ireland will be distributed in Gaza by Ireland’s humanitarian partners, the Jordanian Hashemite Charitable Organisation (JHCO) and the Catholic Relief Services (CRS).
The stocks – including tents, blankets, water cans and other vital household items – arrived in Jordan this week having made their way by road from a UN Depot in Dubai. They will travel onward through these humanitarian partners to Gaza, where they will be provided to people in desperate need of humanitarian aid.
Ireland’s Ambassador to Jordan, Marianne Bolger, was on hand to receive the aid on April 8th. She met with Dr. Hussein AlShebli of the Jordanian Hashemite Charitable Organization, who are assisting with facilitating the deployment.
As part of Ireland’s Rapid Response Initiative, Irish Aid stores humanitarian stocks at a UN Depot in Dubai, from where they can be deployed anywhere around the world.
This latest delivery of stocks follows on from 50 tonnes of similar aid from Ireland being distributed to people in Gaza in December.
Ireland is deeply concerned by the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Half the population of Gaza face imminent famine and 100% of the population face acute food insecurity.
In February, Ireland announced an additional contribution of €20 million to support the vital work of UNRWA in Gaza.
