Ambassador of Ireland to Senegal
Derek Hannon
Welcome message
Dia dhaoibh go léir. Fáilte go hAmbasáid na hÉireann!
I am delighted to welcome you to the website of the Embassy of Ireland in Senegal. We hope that you will find interesting news updates on the work of the Embassy, clear guidance on consular services and a better understanding of Ireland’s engagement in Senegal.
I am honoured to serve as the first resident Ambassador of Ireland to Senegal. Since my arrival in January 2023, I have been deeply impressed by the friendliness of the Senegalese people and the vitality of life in Dakar and throughout the country. I look forward to further developing bilateral ties between Ireland and Senegal in the years ahead.
Ireland’s new Embassy in Dakar is our first in French-speaking West Africa and is part of Ireland's strategy to double the scope and impact of our global footprint. We were delighted to welcome the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, to Senegal in January 2023 during the opening of the new embassy, his first visit to West Africa as President of Ireland.
The decision to open an embassy in Dakar recognises the important role Senegal plays as a diplomatic, political and economic hub in the region. Senegal has long been a bulwark of democracy and the rule of law in West Africa and is a committed champion of the multilateral system and the rules-based international order. These values are also at the heart of Ireland's foreign policy.
Ireland's engagement with the African continent is one of which we are proud. The connections between Ireland and Africa date back many centuries when Irish people, including missionaries, came to this continent . As a newly independent country, Ireland was an active supporter of the principle of self-determination for African countries in the 20th century. Central to our relationship is a sense of partnership and shared values and support for the struggle for democracy, freedom, human rights and social justice.
In line with our Strategy for Africa to 2025, one of Ireland's key foreign policy priorities is to strengthen political, economic and educational links with African countries and institutions. Our newest Embassy in Senegal will help to strengthen theses connections in the years ahead. In addition to supporting our political and diplomatic links, we are keen to support enhanced economic and trade relations between Ireland and Senegal and the broader region.
Our Embassy in Dakar will also play a role in deepening our development cooperation in the region in line with our international development policy A Better World.
There are many parallels between Ireland and Senegal. We are both located on the westernmost points of our respective continents and share an Atlantic perspective, a post-colonial history, a common experience of migration and strong links with our respective diasporas. Our cultural heritage is at the heart of who we are: hospitality to strangers -– Teranga - in the Senegalese language Wolof a strong tradition of poetry, storytelling, a passion for sport and of course a love of music.
My team and I will build on these shared experiences to strengthen the people-to-people and cultural links between our two countries. We also look forward to strengthening connections in the field of education, including through our Ireland-Africa Fellowship programme.
For Irish citizens planning to visit Senegal, we recommend registering your details with the Embassy and checking our Travel Advice Section before you travel.

Message de bienvenue
Dia dhaoibh go léir. Fáilte go hAmbasáid na hÉireann !
