Team Ireland in Senegal
The opening of the Irish embassy in Senegal in January 2023 is a significant step towards fulfilling the commitment to strengthening Ireland’s engagement in francophone West Africa and the Sahel, made in Global Ireland – Ireland’s Global Footprint to 2025 and Ireland’s Strategy for Africa to 2025. It planned that the Embassy in Senegal will also be accredited to The Gambia and Mali.
Our role is to strengthen Ireland’s bilateral relations with Senegal through enhanced political, cultural, economic and development cooperation. The mission in Dakar will also provide a regional hub for advancing Ireland’s engagement in the broader region of francophone West Africa and the Sahel, including the deepening of the Irish Aid programme. We will also strengthen people-to-people links between Ireland and Senegal and provide consular services to Irish citizens.
While State Agencies (including Bord Bia, Enterprise Ireland, IDA Ireland and Tourism Ireland) are not represented in Senegal, the Embassy will act as a liaison, to promote trade, tourism and inward investment to Ireland.
The Embassy is just one part of ‘Team Ireland’ in West Africa. Ireland also maintains an Embassy in Freetown, Sierra Leone led by Ambassador Aidan Fitzpatrick, an Embassy in Abuja, Nigeria, led by Ambassador Peter Ryan and an Embassy in Monrovia, Liberia led by Ambassador-designate Gerard Considine.
