Team Ireland and Strung Music at the 2023 Gothenburg Cultural Festival
Strung Music brought the very best of Irish culture and creativity to the mainstage of the cultural festival, Göteborgs Kulturkalas, in Gothenburg on 3 September 2023.
The Embassy was delighted to participate in and promote Irish culture at this year’s Gothenburg Cultural Festival (Göteborgs Kulturkalas), in partnership with Tourism Ireland. Contemporary Irish music act, Strung Music, performed a rousing set on the Kungstorget festival mainstage on the afternoon of Sunday, 3 September.
The concert drew a large crowd made up of the Irish community in Gothenburg, fans of Irish culture and festival goers. This year marks the 400 year anniversary of Gothenburg, with the weekend's festivities providing the final milestone in the anniversary programming of Sweden’s second largest city.
Strung Music brought the very best of Irish culture and creativity to a welcome Gothenburg audience. Strung’s participation was particularly special as violinists Maria and Lucia both completed their Masters in Classical Music at the Gothenburg School of Music. They were joined on stage by cellist, Maria, and pianist, Luke, and their lively programme featured a fusion of traditional Irish music, jazz, classical and Swedish folk. This Gothenburg connection and the inclusion of Swedish music made for a very serendipitous afternoon!
The Embassy was represented at the event by Deputy Regional Director for the Nordic Baltic Region, who introduced the act and took the opportunity to highlight the ever-strengthening relationship between Ireland and Sweden and to promote Ireland as an attractive place to visit, particularly with twice-weekly direct flights between Dublin and Gothenburg. This Team Ireland initiative was the result of close collaboration between the Embassy and Tourism Ireland and provided a great opportunity to collaborate with the City of Gothenburg, Göteborg & Co.
This event advanced the delivery of Strategic Objective 4 of the Nordic Strategy, to 'grow Ireland's reputation across the Nordic countries through enhanced promotion of culture, heritage and linkages' and also the commitment to work as one Team Ireland to increase impact. The Embassy will continue to build these cultural and institutional links and we look forward to meeting with and further supporting the vibrant Irish community there very soon!
