The Sustainable Development Goals
Ireland and Kenya were co-facilitators of negotiations at the UN that ultimately led to the current Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Since their adoption in 2015, Ireland has promoted the SDGs and the 2030 Agenda across all of our work at the United Nations, at home, and across the world.
The 2023 SDG Summit
In October 2022, the President of the General Assembly appointed Ambassador Mythen of Ireland and Ambassador Al-Thani of Qatar as co-facilitators to lead consultations on the Political Declaration for the upcoming SDG Summit, which will take place in September 2023. This declaration will be the key outcome from the Heads of State and Government level meeting.
The SDG Summit marks the mid-point of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, and it is already recognised that the SDGs are significantly off track. The Summit will bring together leaders from governments, international organisations, private sector, civil society, women and youth and other stakeholders with the aim of galvanising support globally for the SDGs, through commitments to accelerate implementation and address gaps over the remaining seven years of the Agenda.
The Political Declaration is a moment for all UN member states to recommit to the SDGs and move forward to more actively pursue the 2030 Agenda, for the good of all people.
Cooperating with UN Agencies
Organisations such as UNDP or UNFPA channel financial contributions from member states, including Ireland, to some of the poorest countries in the world. Irish officials participate in committees which oversee the strategy, spending and effectiveness of these organisations. We also engage in processes where member states set international standards for these organisations such as on promoting food and nutrition security or the rule of law.
Responding to Humanitarian Emergencies
Ireland participates in different working groups and committees which seek to ensure that humanitarian assistance is provided in a timely and effective manner to major humanitarian crises around the world. This includes assistance from Ireland.
