Peace and security
The maintenance of international peace and security, as enshrined in the UN Charter, is a key priority for Ireland.
Our work towards this goal is informed by our experience of conflict in Ireland; a desire to offer our distinctive contribution to building sustainable peace and resolving conflict abroad; and the distinguished contribution of our Defence Forces to peacekeeping missions.
Overview
Our efforts to maintain international peace and security are informed by our experience of conflict in Ireland and a desire to offer our distinctive contribution to building sustainable peace.
Security Council
Ireland served on the UN Security Council, with candidacy premised on three themes: empathy, partnership and independence.
Peacekeeping
Ireland has an unbroken record of service with UN peacekeeping missions since our first deployment in 1958.
Disarmament and non-proliferation
We have been a leading voice for decades on disarmament of nuclear weapons.
Women, Peace and Security
Ireland is committed to promoting the meaningful inclusion of women in peace processes and post-conflict peacebuilding. We know from our own experience of building peace the difference that women make.
Peacebuilding
Building on its experience of successful conflict resolution in the Northern Ireland peace process, Ireland works at the UN to promote peacebuilding, mediation and reconciliation around the world.
