Bloomsday 2024
To celebrate Bloomsday 2024, the Consulate supported the presentation of a new exhibition, ‘Joyce: A Global Odyssey,’ to audiences in Tulsa. The exhibition is curated by the Museum of Literature Ireland and the Department of Foreign Affairs.
The exhibition is run in partnership with the University of Tulsa’s Oklahoma Center for the Humanities It is on display at 101 Archer in Tulsa’s Arts District until the end of July.
Bloomsday is an annual global celebration of the Irish writer James Joyce (1882-1941) and his pioneering modernist novel, Ulysses (1922), which is widely regarded as one of the greatest novels ever written. Bloomsday falls on the 16th June, which is the day in 1904 that Ulysses is set on.
A number of special events took place alongside the exhibition to mark Bloomsday, including a special Bloomsday brunch. Local Joyce enthusiasts enjoyed Irish themed food and drink, traditional music by Cairde na Gael and dramatic readings from Ulysses.
The University of Tulsa is an active international centre of Joyce studies and home to the James Joyce Quarterly. The university provided materials to supplement the exhibition from their special collections. These included a casting of Joyce’s death mask.
