Jul ’24 – Minister for the Diaspora Honours Irish-born Vietnam War Hero at Christening of US Naval Ship
Minister Seán Fleming visited Maine to honour the service and sacrifice of Irish-born Vietnam War hero, Patrick Gallagher of County Mayo
Minister for International Development and the Diaspora Seán Fleming visited Maine from 25 to 27 July to attend the christening of the United States naval ship, USS Patrick Gallagher. Named after an US Marine from County Mayo who bravely served in the Vietnam War, the Christening is a major milestone for Ireland’s diaspora in the United States. In his keynote address, Minister Fleming paid tribute to Patrick’s extraordinary life of service. He highlighted that Patrick immigrated to the United States, initially living with extended family in New York while he pursued work and study opportunities. Eventually joining the Marines to serve his adopted country, Patrick’s life exemplified the story of the Irish diaspora who, for generations, have contributed, sacrificed, and served their new homes in the United States. It was a desire to honour this service and love of country that motivated Patrick’s friend, fellow Irish-born veteran Martin Durkan, to launch the “Ship for Patrick” petition campaign to name a US naval ship after Corporal Gallagher. The “Ship for Patrick” campaign attracted wide support both in the United States and Ireland, including from New York Senator Chuck Schumer and former Secretary of the Navy Richard Spencer, and eventually culminated with the US Navy’s decision to honour Patrick Gallagher this July. Gallagher’s sisters Teresa, Rosemarie and Pauline acted as sponsors at the Christening ceremony and travelled from Ireland to attend the Christening along with many members of the Gallagher family. Minister Fleming, along with elected officials including Maine Senator Susan Collins, paid tribute to the efforts of Patrick’s family and friends to honour his memory and celebrate his life.
It was particularly special for the Minister to attend a community reception at the Maine Irish Heritage Center, which serves as a focal point for the Irish and Irish-American communities in Maine. Ireland has long shared deep ties to Maine and Irish emigrants have played a significant part in Maine’s history. Similarly, Maine has also had a deep impact on Ireland’s history as shown by the role former Maine senator George Mitchell played in the Northern Ireland Peace Process.
Also in attendance at the community reception were community organisations from Maine and around New England. In his discussions with community partners, Minister Fleming emphasised the Government of Ireland’s commitment to supporting the Diaspora as evidenced by the Emigrant Support Programme, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.
