Clerk Secretary - Community Outreach
The Consulate General of Ireland, New York is looking for an experienced, highly motivated, enthusiastic and hardworking person with excellent communication and interpersonal and writing skills to fill a full-time position for a one-year period.
Responsibilities
The range of duties will vary over time according to the requirements of the Consulate. The role may include, but will not be limited to, the following:
- Administering the Emigrant Support Programme (ESP), together with the Vice Consul
- Liaising with Irish and Irish American community organisations and the Consulate’s partners on their ESP applications.
- Managing high volumes of competitive applications and preparing documentation for HQ.
- Assisting the Vice Consul to engage with US educational institutes.
- Assistance with high-level visits.
- Events planning and management (both in-person and online).
- Providing administrative support to the Vice Consul and other members of the diplomatic team.
- Records management.
- Assistance in all other areas of the Consulate’s work as and when required.
The specific role of the successful candidate will be determined based on the business needs of the Consulate and flexibility is therefore essential. The candidate must be willing to regularly work out of hours, with time in lieu, to support outreach activities as required.
Key requirements candidates must be able to demonstrate
- Candidates must have a degree or post-graduate qualification in a relevant field
- Candidates must have at least 12 months of relevant professional experience;
- The candidate must demonstrate using work based examples of providing excellent interpersonal skills, being persuasive, working in a team but also dealing effectively with people in external organisations;
- Advanced written and oral communication skills, with the ability to quickly distil and synthesise complex information in writing, and to present it clearly and concisely orally;
- The candidate should provide examples of being solutions-oriented, and committed to delivering results, including by adapting approach if necessary;
- Knowledge of Ireland and the work of Ireland’s diplomatic missions;
- An ability to manage and prioritise within a varied workload;
- Computer literacy and information management skills;
- All applicants must have a permanent legal right to reside and work in the United States of America for a period of over one year.

Salary $57,521.67 per annum

- Salaries are paid direct to a bank account: therefore, the successful candidate must have a bank account;
- The successful candidates will be hired on a 1-year fixed-term contractual basis and will be based at the Consulate General of Ireland.
- Contracts are governed by US labour laws in accordance with US, State and Local Employment Law.
Please note that, where applicable, the Mission does not withhold taxes at source, therefore the successful candidate is responsible for all taxes including social security contributions. On request, successful candidates must be in a position to provide evidence of their compliance with applicable tax and social insurance obligations.
- Hours of attendance will be as fixed from time to time, but will amount to on average not less than 40 hours per week. Where extra attendance is necessary, time off in lieu will be allowed.
- The positions will have an annual leave allowance of 20 days per annum, adjusted where necessary pro rata.

Selection Process:
Depending on the number of applications received, a short-listing of candidates to be called for a competency-based interview may be undertaken based on the Essential/Key Requirements above.
- It is planned that interviews will be held in early/ mid July;
- A skills test may be included in the recruitment process;
- A second interview may be included in the recruitment process;
- A panel may be set up depending on the calibre of candidates.

Security Clearance for Local Staff:
Police security clearance will be sought in respect of individuals who come under consideration for appointment.
