Beauty of Ireland
Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin has been picking up awards at festivals around the world, for best screenplay, acting and direction all while showing the “beauty and cinema” of Ireland.
Our partners, Tourism Ireland – in conjunction with Searchlight Pictures – created a short, behind-the-scenes video for "The Banshees of Inisherin" usage footage taken while the production was underway.
Where was The Banshees of Inisherin filmed?
Nominated for a staggering nine Oscars (as mentioned), the film shows both a ‘harshness’ and ‘softness’ to the landscape of imaginary place, Inisherin. But the production's locations were the very real islands off the rugged west coast of Ireland, Inis Meáin (Inishmaan) and Achill island – both along the Wild Atlantic Way.
The screen industry in Ireland
This week, Minister for Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin TD – together with Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland, Tourism Ireland, IDA Ireland, Enterprise Ireland and the Department of Foreign Affairs – are leading a trade mission in Los Angeles to promote Irish screen industry and culture ahead of the 2023 Academy Awards.
The trade mission is part of the wider St Patrick's Day 2023 programme, where the Taoiseach, Tánaiste and Government Ministers are promoting Ireland and Irish interests around the world. In LA, our Consulate General works closely with Screen Ireland and Culture Ireland to promote Irish culture and artists tirelessly all year around.
The economic contribution of Ireland’s screen industries has more than doubled in the last decade, from €164m in 2010 to €500m in 2022.
