Lisa Fingleton and the Barna Way
Nurturing resilient food systems in the heart of Ballybunion
In the face of climate change and biodiversity loss, the Barna Way project stands as a beacon of hope, embodying a commitment to a cleaner and greener future for Ireland.
At the heart of their mission is a belief in the transformative power of creativity and community engagement.
The Barna Way, nestled near Ballybunion in County Kerry, is not just an organic farm and wildlife sanctuary; it's a testament to the benefits of listening to the land and fostering inclusivity.
With initiatives like the 'Healing Herb Garden' and 'Peace Path' winding through native woodland, it offers a space for reflection and connection with nature.
Led by artist Lisa Fingleton and photographer Rena Blake, the Barna Way has undertaken ambitious efforts to protect biodiversity, planting over 10,000 native Irish trees and actively engaging with the local community through social farming and cultural events.
Local food, global impact
Their latest endeavour, the ‘Brilliant Ballybunion’ project, supported by the Creative Ireland Creative Climate Action Fund, aims to empower the community to envision a future that prioritises the diversity of local food systems.
Through collaborative efforts and a four-stage approach encompassing Information, Exploration, Inspiration, and Expression, they seek to enact lasting change.
The Barna Way is not just a local initiative; it's a global endeavour. Welcoming artists, writers, volunteers, and interns from around the world, projects like the 30 Day Local Food Challenge and skills workshops foster an environment of intercultural exchange and shared knowledge.
Their motto, "think global, act local”, underscores their commitment to prompting change on a worldwide scale through grassroots efforts.
Cultivating change
As we confront the challenges of our time, Lisa, Rena and the Barna Way project serve as inspiring examples of how creativity, community engagement, and a deep connection to the land can pave the way towards a sustainable and inclusive future for all.
