Wild Ireland
One man’s mission to create a sustainable sanctuary for Ireland's wildlife.
Meet Killian McLaughlin, a leading figure in wildlife conservation efforts in Ireland and one of our Ireland.ie Guiding Lights.
As the Founder of Wild Ireland in Donegal, Killian is dedicated to creating a sustainable sanctuary for various species, including bears, wolves, wild boar, and lynx.
Some of the creatures that call Wild Ireland home haven't roamed our shores in millennia, yet now live comfortably in environments as close to their ancestral homelands as possible – no easy feat for the solicitor and zoologist but one in which he is passionate about succeeding.
From a young age, McLaughlin harboured a profound love for animals, an enthusiasim that would shape his life's journey. His fascination with nature predates his legal career, with his fondness for wildlife deeply rooted in his childhood experiences.
Growing up surrounded by the beauty of Ireland's landscapes, Killian's connection to the natural world blossomed early on. This youthful affinity laid the foundation for his later endeavours, driving him to combine his legal expertise with a commitment to animal welfare.
The Bearman’s sanctuary story
The compelling Netflix documentary series Return of the Wild chronicles Killian and his wife Katie's inspiring journey to create the sanctuary in the aptly titled episode, The Bearman of Buncrana.
Despite facing numerous obstacles, including financial constraints, bureaucratic hurdles, and unforeseen setbacks, Killian's unwavering dedication to the animals and the ancient Celtic rainforest in which they live shines through.
Killian's background as a solicitor proves invaluable in navigating legal complexities and securing funding for the project, while his passion for nature and conservation is evident in every aspect of Wild Ireland's mission – from rescuing abused animals to educating visitors about global conservation issues.
Beyond animal welfare, Wild Ireland’s work also includes ecosystem restoration and environmental conservation, contributing to the preservation of Ireland's natural heritage more broadly.
The sanctuary offers online support through ticket purchases and updates on their website. Through sustainable practices and educational initiatives, Killian, Katie and the team aim to inspire future generations of conservationists.
